Grand Theft Auto – Part 2

Somewhere between 9:00 PM and 11:00 PM my brother and I had been joined by our good friend Steve.  Steve always seemed to be there during our best adventures.  Still, from the time he arrived until 11:00, it did not look like it was going to be the night we had anticipated.  Then, the completely unexpected happened.

As I was crouched in a ditch behind some holly bushes another car came up the street.  I spoke a brief description of the vehicle to my brother who was on the roof.  He acknowledged.  However, instead of driving by the house at a normal speed, this vehicle slowed to a crawl.

“They’re slowing down!”  I relayed, excited to finally see some action.  “I can see the tag.”

I could hear my brother’s pulse quicken through his voice.  Our waiting had paid off.  He wrote down the numbers and then asked, “Have they thrown anything?”

“Nothing,” I replied.  “They don’t even have a window down!”  I was looking hard through the binoculars by now, hoping for an assault.  They continued past the house without doing a thing.  “They’re moving on.”  That’s when I noticed one of the passengers looked familiar.  “Hey, uh..Chris?”

      “Yeah.”

I decided I was losing my mind.  “Never mind, I just thought I recognized someone in the car.”

“Oh.  They didn’t throw anything,” he commented.

“I know,”  I replied.  “Maybe they were scouting out the place first.  I think we should wait a little longer.  Maybe they’ll be back.”

“Ten four.”  He agreed and we waited.  It didn’t take long until the car was in sight again.  Only this time, instead of driving up to the house, it stopped about one hundred yards to my rear and four people climbed out.

“Chris!”  I shouted a whisper as I dove for cover, hoping they would not see me.

       “What is it?” he replied.

“They’re getting out of the car!  There are four of them and they are headed right for me.”  I rolled into the woods as quietly as possible, not knowing if my cover had been blown.  They walked right past me.  “They didn’t see me,”  I relayed, catching my breath.

“What’s going on?”  Chris asked, confused by the situation.

“Well, buddy,”  I said regaining my composure,  “I think Mr. Bowers and his friends are about to roll our yard!”

  1. I bookmarked your blog yesterday of the day before so I could come back and read “the rest of the story”. Can’t wait to hear the rest—brings back memories =)

  2. [...] October brings Autumn Alabama memories to my mind, trick or treatin’ and pumpkin seeds, haunted houses and Halloween carnivals, rolling yards (see my earlier blog) and giant cardboard box mazes!  Okay, I know you were with me until the maze thing, but honestly one of my most vivid and awesome memories centers on the monumental task of building a giant refrigerator box maze in our church gymnasium every October.
